An early spring stroll at Mass Audubon Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary brings a surprise!
Long Pasture Sanctuary, just an easy 15-minute drive from Honeysuckle Hill Inn, is a 101 acre wildlife refuge featuring woodland trails, meadows, a lovely pond, beaches and tidal flats.
As you hike the sanctuary you will encounter a diverse, and lovely terrain. The Harbor Overlook Trail provides beautiful glimpses of Barnstable Harbor and brings you to Night Heron Pond where, if you are lucky, you will find a family of turtles sunning themselves on a well-placed log.
The Marsh Boardwalk brings you to of the Barnstable Great Marsh, Cape Cod’s largest salt marsh and a secluded beach with wonderful views of Sandy Neck Barrier Beach and Lighthouse. There you can sunbathe, swim, or walk the tidal flats in search of horseshoe crabs or moon snails.
Several other trails meander the sanctuary where you will come upon vernal pools, a variety of local species including eastern box turtles, American woodcocks, and up to 30 species of butterflies.
